Bad Breath be Gone!

You are not alone if have “not so fresh” breath.  Most everyone has experienced bad breath, and probably realized that it can make you self conscious and prevent you from smiling. Effective cures for bad breath do exist, but it is always a good idea to first look at what is causing the problem.

Bad breath is the result of anaerobic bacteria in your mouth and on your tongue. Just like us, bacteria consume and produce waste. The waste that bacteria produce are volatile sulfur compounds which give off a malodor. Volatile means that the compounds evaporate readily and can be smelt right away. When someone says it smells like a “rotten egg”, it is the hydrogen sulfide that the bacteria give off that we smell.

Naturally, some food like garlic leave a distinct odor in your mouth. When the food is digested, the oils remain in your blood stream and continue to give off a strong odor. This is not necessarily “bad breath”, however, it is the result of eating something with a strong odor. Other reasons like, low-carb diets, antibiotics, heart burn, acid reflux, tobacco, diseases, and dry mouth can lead to bad breath, but they are mostly avoidable. Strict dieting can lead to ketoacidosis, which is the breakdown of chemicals in your body while fasting. Smoking dries out your mouth, your saliva is not there to keep the mouth moistened. Instead, bacteria are able to build upon the tongue, gums, and cheeks.

Although there are various foods and reasons for volatile sulfur compound wastes, the main goal of our oral hygiene care is to eliminate theses bacteria throughout our day. A strong malodor is good evidence  that you may have periodontal disease. Remember these bacteria are anaerobic and like to find small spaces to live in (between your teeth and below the gum-line). Without routine flossing and brushing and the removal of bacteria they can eventually be a contributor to periodontal disease.
